Merged I

Colour, geometry, pattern and layering are key elements of these collages with the use of geometric, architectural, or in this case, engineering shapes together with softer, organic forms. The starting point for these new “Merged” collages are modern, brightly coloured tunnelling shields. Photographs or cutout shapes inspired by lichen provide the organic aspect of these collages. Lichen and fungus have a fascinating symbiotic relationship. Lichen can grow on almost any surface and is often found on buildings or industrial structures. The combination of the two forms is both unexpected and yet inevitable. The postage stamps were part of Hilary’s father’s collection and they celebrate the internationality of the different tunneling shields and the collaboration that some tunnels  necessitated between countries and the link that followed.
