Bitter Sweet

Cardboard egg boxes.

The sculpture is displayed just above head height to reinforce the references of halo and crown of thorns. The two references are in direct conflict although not disparate. Haloes infer perfection, immortality, angelic and saint-like qualities, whereas a crown of thorns conjures suffering, sacrifice, hurt and pain. All these qualities are fused into one piece. Bitter Sweet is constructed of pieces of egg boxes and so defines that the sculpture as feminine. It is a piece which encapsulates motherhood, whether it be the saint-like Mary or the archetypal mother experiencing joy and suffering.
